Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, more commonly known as Padre Pio, was born Francesco Forgione in 1887 in the small village of Pietrelcina, Italy. From a young age, he felt called to a spiritual life and at the age of 15, he joined the Capuchin friars, taking the name Pio in honor of Pope Pius I. He was ordained a priest in 1910. Padre Pio was known for his piety, charity, and the mystic experiences he claimed to have, including receiving the stigmata in 1918, which are wounds resembling those of Christ's Crucifixion. Throughout his life, Padre Pio dedicated himself to the sacrament of confession and was instrumental in the establishment of a major hospital in San Giovanni Rotondo, serving those in pain and need. His deep spirituality, miraculous healings attributed to his intercession, and compassionate works led to a worldwide following. Padre Pio was canonized as a saint by Pope John Paul II in 2002.
