Doctors say that our eyes alone can suffer from more than a hundred different diseases. Let us judge by this what could happen to the other members of our body. Hence, health is considered one of the most precious treasures one can possess in this world. Everyone strives to preserve it at all costs, despite a thousand worries; and if, unfortunately, it is lost, what do we not do to regain it? If we have the means, we call the wisest and most renowned doctors; we write or even travel abroad to consult the most celebrated specialists: How much we value our health!Since this is the condition of humanity, what more skilled physician could we find for our illnesses than the Archangel Saint Raphael? If he undertakes to assist us, the cure is unquestionable; for he is not only the physician of health, medicus salutis, but he is also the infallible remedy in his capacity as the medicine of God: Raphael medicine Dei. Why then not promptly resort to the patronage of Saint Raphael in our illnesses and those of those who are most dear to us? Let us ask him to assist us and inspire the doctors who care for us with the most appropriate remedies for a prompt and complete cure. Not only should the sick turn to Saint Raphael, but also the physicians themselves: let them ask the Holy Archangel to deign to enlighten them about the nature and origin of their illness, and to suggest to their intelligence the most effective remedies. If it is appropriate to turn to Saint Raphael to preserve our bodily health or to restore it when we have lost it, we should turn to him with much greater interest to preserve the health of our soul, which is the grace of God. Let us pray that if we ever lose it, he will help us regain it through sincere penance, of which the gall of a fish is a true symbol, because it is bitter. The Archangel Saint Raphael was given by Our Lord to the Franciscan nun of Naples, Saint Maria Frances of the Five Wounds,to assist her in her illnesses. The Celestial Spirit took extraordinary care of this, worthy of her respect and her love for God, who had entrusted the Saint to her. He appeared to her in the form of a young man dressed in white and of incomparable beauty. Maria Frances was amazed and unable to say a word.The Archangel spoke first, saying to her: I am Raphael, here in the Most High has been sent to heal the wound in your side, which is about to become dangerous. Renew your trust in God and He will bless you. The next morning the wound was completely healed, although a few days later it returned to an alarming appearance. She felt in her heart such a sharp pain that she could not move. The Holy Archangel became her nurse; She would cut the bread for him, taking the knife from his hands and telling him with a gracious smile that he was incapable of serving himself. If he ever tried to lift a chair or any other object whose weight might hurt him, the Archangel would come and lift it with his own hand and carry it to the place where the Saint wished to place it. Day 30GLORY OF SAINT MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL Consider the enormous glory enjoyed by Saint Michael the Archangel, contemplating the face of the Eternal Father up close, for as the divine Savior said, the Angels are always seeing the face of their Heavenly Father.The Sacred Pages tell us that countless Angels are charged with the ministry of God and that another greater number is busy assisting Him, paying court to Him: Thousands upon thousands ministered to God, says the prophet Daniel, andten thousand times hundreds of thousands attended Him.According to the same Sacred Letters, whoever fights valiantly in defense of the law and of what is just will be crowned, and no one more deserving of the crownof glory than Saint Michael the Archangel. He leads the hosts of Heaven against the angels who rebel against their God and Lord. And if the Angels who fought under his banners are happy because they always see the face of the Lord, what happiness does this generous leader enjoy, as a reward for his deeds, whether defeating the dragon in Heaven, or lending his aid and protection to the Lord's Church on earth?No human understanding, unless illuminated by the light of glory, can comprehend the ineffable sweetnesses enjoyed in the mansions of the blessed, and even less can the tongue of a mortal explain those delights that no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart has entered, as Saint Paul says.The Apostle Saint Peter, upon seeing, albeit in passing, on Mount Tabor, the glory of the Lord in His Transfiguration, exclaimed enthusiastically: "Lord, it is good for us to behere." Day 29 DEDICATION TO SAINT MICHAEL THE ARCHANGELThe Holy Mother Church, grateful for the great benefits that Saint Michael the Archangel and, under his command, the Holy Angels continually distribute and lavish on behalf of the holy faith and all its children, dedicates this day, thesolemnity and Divine Office, in honor of Saint Michael and his Holy Angels of all the celestial hierarchies, whichare three in number, divided into nine Angelic Choirs: Angels, Archangels, Virtues, Powers, Principalities, Dominions,Thrones, Cherubim, and Seraphim. These names console faithful souls, just by mentioning them, and compel us toremember the many and singular benefits we all receive from his goodness and generous vigilance and care,especially from the glorious Prince Saint Michael.  God has willed, in various places and times, to work wonderful things through the intercession and ministry of this blessed Prince of the Church, so that all the faithful may know that they are under his protection and be very devoted to him, turning to him in their troubles and needs.In church histories, we read of several apparitions of Saint Michael the Archangel. This is attested by the many churchesconsecrated to the Lordin his memory, both in the East and the West.  We owe great miracles and wonders to the heavenly Prince Saint Michael, who, strong in battle,obtained victory, and continues to exercise the same office, and will do so until the end of the world with all souls, until the end of each one of their lives. What would become of these poor souls, in danger of death, if the glorious Saint Michael did not protect them in the fierce battleof death? What would become of so many dangers that surround us in life, if Saint Michael and his holy Angels did not favor us and free us from them? Not only those we know, but also countless ones we do not know. And Saint Michael favors not only individual souls, but also communities, towns, cities, religious congregations, universities, and chairs of the doctrine of Jesus Christ, which the infernal dragonmost attacks to prevent the preservation and growth of faith and the sanctification of Christian souls and virtues. How many thanks shall we give to the Heavenly Father, who has left us this powerful help, from the depths of his mercy? How can we express our gratitude for the immense goodness and charity with which he watches over us and our well-being? Let us be grateful for so many benefits; and let us know how to take advantage of the powerful help of Saint Michael, turning to him with great trust and asking him from the bottom of our hearts to come to our aid. ExampleSeptember 29th, consecrated by the Church to celebrate the solemn feast of Saint Michael, is also memorable for the great favors that Saint Michael usually bestows on his devotees on that day. Among them, we will mention the following:In the year 1568, the Prince of Condé, driven by his pride and ambition, after deserting the Catholic ranks, placed himself at the head of the French Calvinists and rose up in war against Charles IX, his sovereign, and against all Catholics in France.The struggle was terrible. The Calvinists, supported by Protestants from outside and within, were assured of victory.The Catholics were terrified.In those critical moments, everyone remembered Saint Michael, the conqueror of Satan and all errors and heresies,and decided to invoke him in a most solemn manner. On September 29, an unprecedentedprayer service was held in Paris in honor of Saint Michael. The entire Court, a large numberof Bishops, the religious orders, and an innumerable crowd of faithful formed the magnificent procession. Amidst the authorities, pressed by the crowd, the illustrious relics of all the Churches of the capital of France were carried. Piety and fervor filled every heart and soul. The most glorious Archangel could not ignore so many fervent prayers. The war began: Saint Michael's patronage in favor of the Catholics was palpable. Finally, the day of thepitched battle arrived that would give victory toone side or the other. It actually took place at Jarnac. There, the Catholics annihilated the Calvinists or Huguenots in a brilliant victory that ended the war. Saint Michael gave triumph to his devotees. Day 28SAINT MICHAEL AT THE END OF THE WORLDPoint OneWe read in the Revalation these consoling words concerningthe last days of the world: I saw another angel coming upfrom the east, having the sign of the living God. And he cried out with a loud voice to the four angels who had been given authority to harm the earth and the sea, saying, "Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees until we have marked the servants of God on their foreheads."By this angel who forbids harming God's chosen ones, the saints understand the most glorious Archangel Michael. Admire the sweet concern of this standard-bearer of God, as the Church calls him, who will arrange what is necessary so that the good will not be confused with the bad. On that terrible day, Saint Michael, assisting Elijah, will help him to achieve the conversion of the heretics, the Jews, and all those who allow themselves to be led astray in those last times by the Antichristand his followers. Until the very last moment, Saint Michael will be the help and protection of the people of God.  Rekindle your trust and earn with your piety the protection of the great Archangel for the final hour.Point TwoThe last wicked one on earth, the son of evil, who is known as the Antichrist, will be fought and crushed by the Prince Saint Michael, glorious ruler and victor of the first wicked one who rose up in Heaven against his God and Lord. The Prince of the angelic armies, who, in defense of the glory of the Lord, the Incarnation of the Word, and the admirable Motherhood of the Immaculate Mary, first made that enthusiastic cry resound in Heaven: "Who is like God?" will cause the same triumphant acclamation to resound throughout the earth, as the final expression of God's power, that same triumphant acclamation that will crush Lucifer and all his followers, dragging them back to hell forever.  Examine your conscience and strive to live in such a way that on that terrible day you will not be confused withthe reprobates, but glorified with the elect.ExampleThe holy Doctor of the Church, St. Bede the Venerable, tells us in his history of England that, while Saint Wilfrid was gravely ill in the year 705, the glorious Saint Michael appeared to him, showering him with heavenly consolation.  The holy Archangel, moved by Wilfrid's suffering, miraculously cured him of his illness.To this great favor, he added another no less remarkable one.Before parting from Wilfrid, Saint Michael said to him: "In four years, I will return to seek your soul and take it with me to Heaven."And so it happened. Four years later, Saint Wilfrid died, and Saint Michael came at the hour of their deaths to receive his soul and lead it to Paradise.Final Prayer for Every DayO God, our refuge and strength!
