In 1802, the tomb of a 4th-century teenage girl was discovered with the inscription: Peace be with thee, Philomena. A young martyr, Philomena had refused the evil advances of Emperor Diocletian. He tried to have her killed by anchor drowning, then by archers, and then finally succeeded by lancing. But for centuries after, Philomena was unknown. When her tomb was discovered, miracles abounded. Since then, Philomena has stirred the hearts of millions (often through miracles) while bringing those who know her closer to Jesus.
