Influenced by her dear friend Francis of Assisi, Clare lived a life of poverty and piety. In the year 1244, Emperor Frederick II attacked Clare’s convent walls. Sick in her bed, Clare held the Eucharist high and prayed. The soldiers miraculously fled, no match for the faith of this humble nun. During her illness, God stayed close to Clare, even projecting daily Mass on her wall so she could participate from her sickbed! Today the Poor Clares are a beloved community known for their faith, simplicity and joy.
