Beautiful statue of our Lady of the streets. 9" made from stone resin.
Many of us are] familiar with the Madonna of the Streets. For those of you who are not, it’s a reminder in concrete form of some of the things that can come about when you are consecrated to our Divine Lord. This is a statue that depicts a painting by Ferruzzi, the “Madonna of the Streets.” The story is told that the photographer/painter, Ferruzzi, saw a young woman coming home from school and was so struck by her beauty that he asked her mother if he could photograph her. He received permission, then placed a little baby in her arms and photographed the two and then painted them. You’ve seen the painting, the mother is wearing a polka-dot babushka and is called the “Madonna of the Streets.” Why? The portion of the story that I have told is only half.
It is said that Ferruzzi painted a diptych – a painting that has two sides. The other painting depicts a woman of the streets, a prostitute. She was frantically rushing around the streets of this little Italian town with a baby that had just been born, not knowing what to do. She turned a corner and met the Virgin Mother carrying her baby, Jesus. Mary reached out and took the baby of the prostitute and in return gave her Baby to the prostitute. Those who look at the painting see the Baby that is obviously the infant Jesus and they immediately assume that the prostitute is the Mother of God.
